Herniated Disc and Bulging Disc
A herniated disc is quite different from a bulging disc. When a disc is injured or degenerates, its soft inner gel can leak into the spinal canal. This is known as a disc herniation. The disc material can put pressure on the spinal column’s nerves and cause radiating pain to the arm or leg, depending on whether it’s a lumbar herniated disc or a cervical herniated disc.
Other symptoms include tingling, numbness and weakness in the affected area. The causes for a herniated disc vary. It can be caused by lifting heavy items, twisting suddenly or even a car accident. People who are 35 to 45 years of age are at risk for a herniated disc, as the discs lose protective water content with age. Overweight individuals and those who lead a sedentary lifestyle are also at risk for herniated disc
With a bulging disc, the outer fibrous portion of the disc is weakened. This causes a pressure that causes the disc to stretch and bulge. Most bulging discs occur in the lumbar area of the spine. When the bulging disc impinges on surrounding neural tissues, it can cause pain, numbness and loss in range of motion. A cervical bulging disc is characterized by pain that radiates from the neck and down the arms. A lumbar bulging disc typically presents with pain that can travel to the hips and legs. It may even result in sciatica.
Treatment for Herniated Disc Houston and Bulging Disc
Westchase Wellness Chiropractic Center offers non-invasive treatment for a herniated disc and a bulging disc. Our Houston chiropractor, Dr. John Huang, can help address pain associated with herniated and bulging discs. He implements a multi-faceted treatment approach and integrates different therapeutic methods to optimize patient results. Treatment plans may include spinal manipulation, cold laser therapy, hot and cold packs, electrotherapy, and myofascial release. Each therapeutic modality is designed to synergistically enhance the healing process.
Before any treatment plan is implemented, Dr. John Huang performs a comprehensive exam, including neurological and postural tests. He uses a subluxation station that scans and pinpoints spinal abnormalities that cannot be seen on traditional X-rays. Once he has an accurate diagnosis, an individualized treatment plan is created to meet the unique needs of each patient.
Through gentle spinal adjustments, our chiropractor realigns the spinal components into proper position. Cold laser therapy, hot and cold pack, ultrasound and electrotherapy help reduce inflammation, reduce pain and ramp up the healing process. And with nutritional counseling, patients can learn about vitamins, minerals, natural supplements and healthy food choices to support recovery and maintain good health.
